COOKSTOWN CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE FIXTURE
Vastly different conditions prevailed in Cookstown on Saturday for the Mighty Oaks Cross Country League fixture than had been present a year ago, but as if to prove they’re not just fair weather runners only three from East Down turned out in the Men’s Open race as last year, and in a further outbreak of deja vu, Newcastle’s Seamus Lynch won the race comfortably for the second year in a row. The three performed well though were probably treating it as a warm up for next Saturday’s Joe Seeley Cup 10K in Belfast’s Ormeau Park . Paul Burns indicated his well being with a fine 12th place and first Over 40 followed by Dee Murray in 34th and Gavin Hinds in 66th place. However unfortunately as it takes 4 to make a team we didn’t score, just like last year.

McCONNELL SHIELD AT BALLYCLARE and OTHER EVENTS
A beautiful sunny but crisply cold afternoon greeted the runners as they gathered in Ballyclare on Saturday for the 82nd McConnell Shield cross country races organised by East Antrim Harriers. Although by no means as riveting a contest as last year’s duel in the sun, it was nevertheless a most enjoyable contest with Kilbroney winner Conor Duffy from Glaslough Harriers again taking control of the race just after halfway going on to win from Springwell’s Neil Johnston and North Belfast’s Mark McKinstry who won in Comber last week.
DUBLIN MARATHON
DUBLIN MARATHON
It was the weekend for putting the time back by one hour but trust the Dubliners to outdo the rest of us by putting the day back too. For the first time ever the Dublin City Marathon was held on Sunday, bringing it into line with most of the other big city marathons – and a popular move it proved to be with the race limit of 19500 entries reached long ago.

KILBRONEY PARK IN THE SUN
The Bobby Rea Memorial Cross Country race on Saturday was the 1st round of this year’s Cross Country League and attracted another record breaking entry and huge spectator interest, Due to ground alterations at the usual venue, the UU campus at Jordanstown, the races were held in the superb setting of Kilbroney Park in Rostrevor, in my opinion the best location for cross country running in NI. The weather was first class with autumn sunshine bathing the firm, fast underfoot conditions, in picnic inducing warmth.
