IMPROVED TIMES BUT NO NEW RECORDS

In the absence of both last year’s winners in Saturday’s 6th running of the Dundrum Gr8 Race, there were two certainties, that there would be new names on the champions lists and that neither of them would be mine. The question was, would the near perfect running conditions lead to a new race record time?

The absence of the headwind on the beach contributed significantly to the performances of most runners and it was notable that the winning times were almost 2 minutes better than last year. And yet Brendan Teer’s 2013 record of 44.46 remained unthreatened, with North Belfast Harriers Andrew Annett posting 45.29 ahead of Mourne Runners William McKee 45.34 and North Belfast’s Lindsay Gordon 46.02. Probably the unluckiest runner on the day was another North Belfast runner Brendan Grew who was 3rd last year in 49.31. He ran 47.07 this year, just 1 second short of last year’s winning time and yet finished only 5th!!

BELFAST HALF MARATHON

The third running of the Belfast City Half Marathon on Sunday morning saw the third different start location, with this year’s race beginning on Ormeau Embankment and finishing at the nearby Ozone Centre. Initial reaction to the new route was very favourable though there is no guarantee it won’t change again before next year’s race.  Continue reading

The Shore 10k

The decision to move the second running of the Shore 10K in Killough to the 11th night proved a master stroke last year with the entries almost doubling over the first year. However due to circumstances outside the control of the organisers this year’s event was postponed until last Saturday and the reverse happened with only 50 runners attracted to the venue. This was indeed a very disappointing turnout, even allowing for the suggested effect of participation in Friday night’s Lions Five Mile Race in Newtownards, which in any event turned out to be a red herring, given that none of the local clubs had any runners in that race. DAMBUSTERS – A REAL 10K AND A HALF

Where was the noisiest place in Co Down on Saturday? Probably the last place you would guess would be the Silent Valley? But it certainly was as nearly 550 pairs of feet, supporting runners of all shapes, sizes and levels of fitness made their way round the latest Born2Run event, the Dambusters Half Marathon and 10K races set in the beautiful and mostly very Silent Valley in the heart of the Mournes.  Apart  from the noise from said feet and the occasional fit of heavy breathing the Valley echoed to the strains of Simply the Best and other inspirational tunes as first the Half Marathon competitors swarmed (apologies here to our pollen carrying friends in the honey producing sector, if any if you are offended by this comparison) into the Park having set off from Kilkeel some 3 miles down the road. Then it was the turn of the 300 10K runners to join in and test themselves in the 3 Mile ascent to Ben Crom reservoir.  The consolation waiting at that point was that the remainder of the race is downhill.
