FIELDS OF LIFE 5K ON 9th JUNE

I must begin with an apology for omitting Catherine O’ Connor’s fine run last week in the Field of Life 5K in Stormont Estate when she not only won the  Ladies race but was 2nd overall finisher in 20.03.  I had seen her result but completely overlooked it when compiling the report.

NEW FORGE 5K

Callum Kent entered the New Forge 5k on Wednesday past and tackled the route from New Forge in Belfast with great gusto despite the windy wet conditions. He was 6th overall and 3rd Open Male in a time of 20.21.

 NDAC MINIS

Matthew Taylor headed to Bangor to the NDAC Minis Event to see what was what on the track after seeing all the reports of other Juniors in the last few weeks. It was a terrible night to make a debut but he managed to come home with a silver medal in the shot putt. Super stuff Matthew!

DROMARA 5K

The Fosters family gave a good representation in this event with Davy Foster in 6th place  in 19.28 and his daughters not far behind.  Kirsti was 3rd female overall in 20.22 and Lucy was 20.59 and second in the Female 12-15 place since Kirsti was first in that category. Another memory lapse on my part here again as I had intended to go to Dromara to watch this race, which is a particular favourite of mine, though sadly unable to compete this year due to injury. I’m afraid that it was the victim of another senior moment!

NI&ULSTER AGE GROUP TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

On to Saturday and the Under 14 to Under 17 Age Group Championships at Mary Peter’s Track Saturday.

LAUREN QUALIFIES IN 2 EVENTS and SETS 2 NEW PBs

This is a top level event but suffers in the older categories by being plumb in the middle of school exams and so it was that only the younger members were able to tackle the NI Championships with conviction.  In qualifying 2nd in her U14 Girls 200m heat Lauren Madine set a new pb of 28.32 and took the bronze medal in a hotly contested final in 28.35

She also collected a bronze medal in the Long Jump with a jump of 4.38m. which was another pb and only 10mms outside the Silver medal position. Not a bad day out and in this form who can doubt she will bring home at least one medal from the All Ireland’s in July?

KIRSTI QUALIFIES TOO, BUT MACKENZIE AND IONA PLEASED WITH THEIR EFFORTS.

Another bronze medal was lifted by Kirsti Foster in the U14 800m. She was involved in a close race for podium but had a clear lead over 4th. Her time of 2.28 is a PB by 1 second. All the more impressive given the large field of 24 which was split into 2 races and the medals therefore decided on times. She has also qualified for the All Ireland’s.  Mackenzie Murray had tough competition in his U15 category for the 800m but came a respectable 11 out of 20. An encouraging performance.  Iona Bunbury took part in the long jump as well as the U15 80m Hurdles. It was her first attempt at hurdles at championship level and she was pleased with 4th overall.

WELL DONE TO EVERYONE FROM EAST DOWN WHO TOOK PART.

HILL & DALE ROUND 9 LISA STARS IN THE MEELS (THURS)

Lisa Milligan is one of those quiet and unassuming runners who is happy to go with the flow but in the Hill and Dales she has found a sweet spot, improving week on week and surprising herself by how much she has enjoyed the series. This week was a definite high point when she won her age category to become the newest star in East Down’s ladies line up. So take a bow Lisa, this is worth celebrating!

 50 NOT OUT

Declan Teague, who I thought was still enjoying the good life in the South Atlantic, once aspired to completing 50 marathons by age 50, but as time waits for no man, he was thwarted by Old Father Time on Father’s Day of all days, for although he squeezed in his 50th marathon on Sunday, the 50th birthday had long since disappeared. However despite only light training in the past 2 months, he came an impressive 7th place overall, clocking an excellent time for age, of 3.21 in the race, the Thoroughbred Run held at the National Stud in Kildare over a 2 lap course and he even managed a negative split as a result of some canny pacing. There is definitely something to be said for maturing with age so roll on age 60 (and 60 marathons??) as no doubt it will!

There was also a 10K race on at the same venue and newly joined member Donal Smith turned out for that and showed that his attendance at the club sessions is having great effect by churning out a 48 minute finish. He described everything about the race as “Super” so he’ll need no encouragement to keep at it.

SHORE 10K FOR PIPS and RGU 10K FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS SQUAD

It is with some considerable relief that we have been able to announce that the Shore 10K in Killough will go ahead on 11th July at 7.30pm with proceeds to the PIPs

charity and that the RGU 10K and 2 x 5K Relay will take place on Wednesday 25 July at 7.30pm. The event this year is being promoted to raise funds for the Co. Down Special Olympics squad so please give it your support.

Online entry is open now for both at www.athleticsni.org and although entries will be taken on the night for both it helps greatly if as many as possible have pre-entered.

A big turnout is expected for these very worthy causes.

 PORTAFERRY 10 MILES AND 2 X 5 MILES RELAY

Similarly the entries for the Portaferry 10 Mile Road Race on Tuesday 17th July are open and early registration is recommended as only the first 300 entrants are guaranteed a special Portaferry Gala mug. So don’t delay! On the night entries will cost more too!!

HILL AND DALE

Eleven East Down runners took to the hills again on Thursday night for the Millstone race, Round 7 of the 2018 Series. Neil Andrews was first EDAC man home, in 18th  position, followed by Dee Murray in 38th Gavin Hinds 55th Niall Gibney 59th, with Deirdre Weatherall 91st heralding the arrival of the Ladies squad, with the ever improving Lisa Milligan next in 171st place followed by Cheryl Denvir 202nd, Janine Murray 214th  and Oonagh Breteche 215th respectively, who enjoy themselves every week and are a great advertisement for Hill Running. Paddy McDonald 135th and John Manley 180th are another pair who have clearly caught the H&D bug.

WEATHER WATCHERS

I was due to spend last Saturday helping at the Special Olympics meet at Mary Peters Track, with a full programme of events scheduled as a final warm up for the athletes from NI , who will be competing in the Special Olympics in Dublin in 2 weeks time. I was very disappointed therefore to be informed on Friday night that due to warnings of severe weather received from the Met Office the meeting had been called off and as there was insufficient time left between this weekend and the Olympics themselves the meeting could not be re-scheduled. Now I know that while we all complain about the weather most of the time the forecasts are reasonably reliable so it begs the question in this case of whether those in charge of issuing the forecasts are over careful  and just too fussy about letting people decide for themselves, in individual cases, what to do about pessimistic forecasts.

Certainly here in Downpatrick it was probably the best day of the year so far and I haven’t head of anyone anywhere experiencing the sort of conditions likely to have disrupted an important sporting fixture.  It’s a pity that the squad were deprived of the chance to perform in front of their families and friends.  The awful thing about this unfortunate incident is that the Weather Men had been warning that severe storms would potentially devastate practically everything in NI, from last Friday, only to keep rolling the date forward as the weekend approached. There are however 2 sides to this of course in that, it’s all very well being ultra cautious about potential dangers, taking all information into account, but the information needs to be  spot on accurate, otherwise it just becomes another example of someone crying “Wolf” too often.

NO WEATHER WORRIES HERE

Having spent the Winter months commending the Juniors for their enthusiasm to wade through mud in all conditions it now falls to us to admire their approach to Track and Field. To line up on an athletics track is daunting as every metre of each event is open to scrutiny. No tree lined corners to take a breather! As well as that some of them have attempted disciplines that are new to them in Jumps and Throws in addition to experimenting with the different distances from sprint to longer events. It is fantastic to see and who knows what talent will be discovered. With the North Down Minis and Open Events and the Fab Five Series continuing throughout the Summer there are more opportunities for those who are still trying to pluck up the courage and they should take heart from the experiences of others as to date EDAC Juniors have done themselves proud.

FAB FIVE FIXTURE @  MARY PETER’S TRACK – THURSDAY

U13 Mile Lauren Madine came a blistering first with Lucy Foster 3rd -5.39 and 5.54 respectively.

U15 Mile Kirsti Foster was 2nd ( no time available).

U11 800m (out of 24) Jodi Foster won her heat in a time of 2.45 which placed her 3rd overall. Kari Foster placed 11th in 3.02 and Erin Moore finished in a time of 3.07 in 14th place.

Erin Moore also ran the 100m and had a go at the javelin and Kirsti tried the hurdles for the first time.

NI & ULSTER T&F CHAMPIONSHIPS – FINN VALLEY
At the weekend a contingent travelled to Finn Valley in Donegal for the NI&Ulster Championships (U9-U13)  known as The Children’s Games. It turned out to be a hot, sunny day which made for fantastic spectating conditions but was tough on the athletes especially those who entered multiple events. Caragh and Erin Moore, Alex and Oliver Robinson, Anna Gardiner and Kari, Jodi and Lucy Foster ran and jumped their hearts out and gained a lot of useful experience. Thanks are due to their parents for transporting them to the venue and as a result of this commitment we had athletes in every category U9/10/11/12 and 13.

They were worthy representatives of EDAC and while not all the placings etc are available at this time there were some promising performances. For Caragh Moore one of our youngest athletes racing as U9 it was a great introduction to the sport. It is also worth noting that it was the 9th birthday of Alex and he chose to spend it bashing out a 500m race. Such dedication! Oliver Robinson got value for money by getting to re run his 80m heat twice due to malfunction of timing equipment. Luckily he was first both times but the added exertion took its toll and he finished 5th in final. Erin ran in U11 60 and 600m with confidence.

The Fosters collectively declared the longer distances their preference but still tackled the sprints for good measure. Jodi was 2nd in her heat of the U12 600m and may qualify for the All Irelands in July as one of the top 4 fastest times when the results are collated. Lucy Foster and Anna Gardiner both ran in the U13 600m. Lucy had a strong race coming 3rd in her heat and Anna was delighted to come home with a Silver Medal placing 2nd overall with an exciting dip on the line. This will definitely qualify her for the All Irelands. Well done Anna!

NEIL McCARTAN in POMPEY

As the lone Senior EDAC representative on the track Neil can pride himself on leading the way for the Juniors with his dedication to his sport. This weekend he travelled to Portsmouth to a British League Match and took part in the 1500m. It was a tactical race with a slow start leading to an inevitable charge to the finish. Neil did well to place 5th in 3.56.16. Next weekend will see him race in the NI&Ulster Senior Championships and we wish him well.

WALLED CITY MARATHON

Clare Carson having declared Paris Marathon a little hot probably never thought that the Walled City Marathon would offer a repeat of those warm conditions but on Sunday the temperatures gradually rose throughout the day to go from being pleasant to becoming a drain on energy. Despite this she managed a respectable sub 4.30 (4.29) in the company of Kevin Kelly and they both enjoyed the event. Linda Cunningham also added this one to her belt. With her tally now over 100 she will be needing a new belt very soon! 1033 competitors took part and the winner was Dan Tanui in a new course record of 2.19.44. The fastest female was Heather Noone in 3.05.

THIS WEEKEND

The big event this weekend is the NI and Ulster Open Senior Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning at 10.00am on Saturday 9 June at Mary Peters Track.

NORTH DOWN AC TRACK MEETING

At the first North Down AC track meeting of the year held at the Bangor Sportsplex, last Thursday night, a few EDAC junior athletes put their toe to the line. As the races are run as time trials and athletes enter in mixed age categories, the results are not easily reported but suffice to say it was a useful exercise for those who attended in terms of trying various distances and getting the feel of the track. The following took part; Iona Bunbury and Lauren Madine both did long jump and 150m. Lauren also ran the 600m as did Kirsti Foster, Lucy Foster and Edie Carroll. Laura Gardiner on a visit home from university gave the 3k a go. It was a cold night and breezy to boot so here’s hoping that the temperatures rise a bit before the first of the series at Mary Peter’s Track next Thursday.

 OMAGH HALF MARATHON

Dermot Cahill returned to Omagh last Saturday the scene of his previous pb for the Half Marathon distance and despite it not being the most user friendly route in the calendar, he improved his pb by over one minute his 1.29.27 comparing very well the with his 2017 time of 1.30 28.

There was a new pb 1.55.01also for the only other East Down AC athlete to take part, Carmel Tumelty, who week in week out, continues to chisel away at those times and gets her just rewards for her relaxed, unflappable attitude to running. She always enjoys it and has a smile for everyone.  Well Done Carmel

Chris Smith also ran in this event clocking a respectable 1.45. This is an achievement after his recurrent niggles. His son Aaron who has recently rejoined EDAC ranks gave it a go too. Somewhat of a challenge with lack of preparation but it is obvious that he is going to throw himself into club membership with enthusiasm! Good to see.

PARIS MARATHON

Clare Carson, Kevin Kelly and Stephen Heasley all flew the EDAC flag in the Paris marathon this weekend. Clare discovered that the EDAC colours mimic the Spanish Flag and hence she got more support than she might expected which was a welcome surprise indeed. The route takes in many iconic sights and the atmosphere was uplifting according to the feedback. The warm weather that the rest of us are jealously craving was declared a little warm for running but they all finished in one piece albeit with slower recorded times than they might have initially targeted. However given that marathon training is a long and weary road and each in turn had time out with injury they did well to persevere and get the job done. It appears that they would all recommend this event to anyone thinking of an away marathon in the future.

CASTLEWELLAN SPRING LAKES CHALLENGE

At the Castlewellan Spring Lakes Challenge hosted by Castlewellan GAA on Sunday a couple of our younger members Matthew Taylor (30th out of 77) and William Taylor (57th) romped round the 5k loop in perfect Spring like conditions. Mum and dad, John and Nuala did the 10k and declared it a pleasant route. Well done the Family Taylor!

TITANIC QUARTER 10K

Sunday morning was a beautiful one for running and almost 1000 men and women gathered in the Titanic Quarter for the annual 10K road race.  Stephen Scullion, representing Clonliffe Harriers, was undoubtedly the class act in the race and by the time he passed my marshalling point at around 7K he was well clear of the field, led by Chris Madden, City of Lisburn with Mark Long City of Derry Spartans in third. This order was maintained until the end, with Scullion  crossing the finish line in 30.29, almost one minute ahead of Madden.

LADIES RACE

The Ladies race was more competitive, for the minor placings as no one could hold a candle to Mourne Runners Laura Graham who won in 35.27, with North Belfast’s Gladys Ganiel 36.50 holding onto second place by  a mere 7 seconds from North Down’s fast finishing Rachel Gibson.

EAST DOWN AT TITANIC

The first of the East Down vests to cross the line was worn by Mark Milligan, who clocked 35.51 to claim 25th place overall.

The next East Down runner to appear was Davy Foster 38.24 in 56th  place followed by Paul Burns 39.06 in 66th place and Joanne Foster 41.41 looking in great shape and taking an excellent 125th place overall.

Mark O’Connor 44.13 and 156th went past complaining about someone having forced him to eat too many chocolate Easter eggs, a complaint too many of us seem to suffer from at this time of year, and Tracey McCaughey 54.24 timed her run to perfection to claim 500th place.

Well Done to all who took part in any of the venues mentioned.

LIONS 3 LAKES 7K FUN RUN and 15K ROAD RACE

The Downpatrick Lions Club annual 3 Lakes races take place this year on Saturday 12th  May beginning at 11.00am to raise funds for the Down’s Syndrome Association but additionally is hoping to help promote the needs of another charity, the Cure Parkinson’s Trust. It is aiming to attract a good turnout from local clubs. The races are promoted strongly by East Down Athletics Club and organised by Atlas Running. For more information please contact Adrian Daye on 07876560015, or alternatively via email: atlas@atlasrunning.co.uk

CURE PARKINSON’S TRUST

I have a particular interest in any attempts to raise funds for the Cure Parkinson’s Trust (CPT) and its primary aim of finding a cure for this particular illness so by way of me taking a greater interest in the Charity’s operations, I have agreed to become a sort of unofficial ambassador for the Trust in NI.  As the 3 Lakes event this year will be my first official duty in this capacity, though whether “official” and “duty” are appropriate words to use in the context of  the  “unofficial, ambassadorial” nature of the role I don’t know. Anyway be that as it may, I am opening a Just Giving page for any of my friends in the running fraternity, who may wish to support the races but are unable to get to them and indeed for anyone who wants to wish me well in this position or who has a soft spot for this particular charity.

JIMMY’S TEN 2018

What a difference a week makes!! Just 7 days after the gloom that had descended on East Down AC following the postponement of Jimmy’s Ten last Sunday, came the joy at the opposite end of the emotional spectrum. Relief as well was another palpable emotion felt by everyone involved at the actual staging the race. A week’s intensive work by East Down members and the good offices of a wide range of outside bodies led to the event taking place just one week late.  The advent of a beautiful Spring morning greeted the organisers as they took advantage of the extra hour’s sunlight to stage what was described by some as a “miraculous turnaround”.

 CLUB APOLOGISES

Of course putting on an event like Jimmy’s Ten can cause inconvenience at the best of times and even more so when it has to be rearranged at short notice. East Down AC wish it to be known that they apologise to anyone who did not hear of the re-arranged details or was affected in any way by the road closures and hold ups brought about by Sunday’s race. Every effort was made by the Club and other bodies to highlight the new arrangements but we acknowledge that not everyone heard. We sincerely hope that you were not delayed in either reaching your place of worship, the horse racing at Downpatrick Racecourse or indeed any other destination on Sunday morning.

IN the absence of any of the previous winners in either the Men’s or Women’s races there was always going to be new names to be inscribed on the winners Shield. In the event, despite the difficulties caused by last week’s postponement, the delay enabled several runners who were not due to take part , because of other commitments, to enter and to contribute to the contest at the front. Although Mark McKinstry, North Belfast Harriers, eventually ran out the clear winner, his time of 31.45 giving him a 68 second advantage  over Willowfield’s Neil Weir, less than 24 hours since he took 3rd place in the Larne Half Marathon, with another 5 second gap between him and 3rd placed Gerard Heaney unattached. Emmett McGinty 4th from City of  Derry Spartans just held off the challenge of East Down’s Aaron McGrady, a runner who has improved out of all recognition this year and who is targeting Jimmy’s Ten next year as his No. 1 priority. I wouldn’t bet against him achieving his goal.

Jimmy's 10K Men's Podium

Jimmy’s 10K Men’s Podium

Not all that far behind Aaron came the tough as teak and ever dependable Martin Willcox 36.07, in 9th place and 1st Male Over 45, followed by another to look out for in the coming months Ciaran Denvir 37.04 in 15th place.

HISTORIC WIN FOR CATHERINE

The next East Down vest to appear was worn by Catherine O’Connor 38.15, in overall 19th place, who thanks to last week’s postponement was prevailed on to run this time and set her place in the history of the race by becoming the first East Down AC member to win the Ladies race.

 THE SUB 40 SQUAD

Out of the 596 finishers there were 36 runners under the 40 minute barrier, a pretty good percentage by today’s standard.

And continuing the good cross country form he has shown all year Dee Murray 39.24 was comfortably inside that number claiming 25th place, while young Callum Kent 39.33 was right behind, as the second leg runner in the winning Relay duo formed with another East Down man James Savage. Tracey Atkinson Albertville  39.37  and Susan Smyth Dromore AC 39.43 won the 2nd and 3rd Ladies prizes in 29th and 30th places respectively while Dermot Cahill 39.48 was the last EDAC man to cross the line in sub 40 minutes, setting a new pb in the process, having taken his lead from the 40 minute pacer, East Down’s Paul Burns, an excellent spot on run in 39.53. Perhaps he’ll get it spot on next year!!

Liam Keenan was not particularly pleased with posting 42.18, just behind clubmates Colin Shields and Deirdre Weatherall, though he should be pleased as punch given his lack of proper training I recent months. The first All Female Relay Team, East Down’s Lauren Madine and Anna Gardiner 41.24 finished just ahead of this group, which also comprised the second all Female Relay team of Lucy and Kirsti Foster 41.58.

My postman, Neil Young, did extremely well to finish in 42.55, so customers on his round can expect a first class delivery tomorrow – but no bills for me please! East Down debutant Niall Gibney looked comfortable with his 43.34, while Edie Carroll simply cruised in at 43.37, to claim the Female Junior prize followed by Aoife Cochrane in 44.16. Another debutant in Club colours was Garry Walsh in 44.31, with Cheryl Denvir, Paddy McDonald, Michael Morrissey, Michael Robinson, Conor Findlay another promising Junior making his debut at the distance and John Manley all in close proximity. Conor’s Mum Wendy made it into the top 200 finishers taking 197th place . Marguerite Robinson led the next squad of EDAC men and women comprising Seaus Savage, Liz O’Hagen, Tracey McCaughey, Roisin Gaffney, Ian McCracken, Alison Graham, Cathy Burke, Gavin McConvey, Joanne Carson, Catherine Gilchrist, Janine Murray, Cathy Flinn and Laura Smith who all crept in under the 60 minute mark while Sean Sealey and Mags Flynn were only slightly beyond it.

However the prize for he most appropriate placing goes to Karen McFall, running number 541, who finished in 541st place. She’s gong looking for number 1 next year!

QUEEN’S 3 and 5K RACES and LARNE HALF MARATHON

East Down athletes were also busy at two other venues during the week, with several doubling up with 2 races including Jimmy’s Ten on Sunday. Half Marathon performances as shown in attached spreadsheet. Details of Queen’s & Larne performances to follow next week.

STORMONT CROSS COUNTRY on SATURDAY
On Saturday both East Down seniors and Juniors were in action at Stormont, one of the most popular venues in the cross country season and happily reinstated as a Cross Country League fixture.

JUNIORS OUT IN FORCE
East Down juniors contributed significantly to the huge numbers in the primary school races which set the programme of races in motion. With 106 boys in the Boys race Ollie Robinson did well to take 19th place, while still recovering from a bout of flu, with younger brother Alex and Kieran Trainor providing excellent support in 28th and 36th places respectively.
